St Sebastian Pendant

This saint’s pendant uses a common stone – gypsum alabaster. The ancient Romans occasionally used fine grained alabaster for sculptures. (Just never get a drop of vinegar on it!) I formed the foundation piece, local to NC, in the shape of an arrow head; this will make perfect sense to devotees of St Sebastian. I then carved into the stone a 2mm deep circle within which is embedded the saint’s metal. It was bought as a tourist souvenir during the late 1950s in Rome in front of the Catacombs of St Sebastian (see picture). Judging by the light oxidation I’m guessing it’s silver plated. The blood red Swarovski crystal honors this Diocletian Persecution era saint. The clothe cord measures 18”+.
